First, do get a card reader. It is faster and simpler than using moving files directly from the camera via the USB cable. The descriptions I see above seem to differ slightly from how I do it. The following assumes that you use OS X.
Put card in card reader attached to the computer. The Image Capture application should automatically launch and recognize your card. (Though it may refer to it as a 'device' or 'camera.'
If necessary, use the dialog to identify the folder into which you want to place the image files. You can change other settings as well: automatic launching of other apps, whether to automatically delete files from the card after transfer, etc. Once the files have transferred, open a Finder window and eject the card. The RAW files are now on your computer. Since I use Photoshop, my next step is to launch Bridge to browse the folder containing the new files, which I then open and process in Photoshop.
The whole process is quite simple and automatic once you get it set up. As to your iPhoto problem, I didn't notice that anybody mentioned it, but if you aren't using the latest version (6), you might not be able to download your RAW images. IPhoto didn't support my camera, and may not support yours either. As others have mentioned, you can get Image Capture to download them, but if you want to use iPhoto, you may need the upgrade. Also, in order to get the Canon software to work, you will need to use Image Capture to change the application used. Open it, open its preferences, and if you want to use Canon's on, try its 'Camera Window' software.
